QA­drian Foster is try­ing to find out about his grand­fa­ther Wil­liam John Scott. Wil­liam’s mar­riage cer­tifi­cate showed that he mar­ried in Cam­ber­well in 1930. His bride was née Amos and his father, also Wil­liam John Scott, had died.

ACatharine Stevens re­sponded, say­ing: “Look­ing at the 1911 census, there is an ob­vi­ous en­try for Wil­liam John Scott, born 1906, in Herne Hill, son of Wil­liam John Scott and Mar­garet née Hunt, who mar­ried Dec Quar­ter 1896 in Lam­beth (1d 908), and are liv­ing at 58 Ef­fra Pa­rade, Brix­ton.” This shows Wil­liam John Scott, 34, house painter born Herne Hill and wife Mar­garet, 30, born in Lough­bourgh. The chil­dren listed in­clude Mar­garet, 14; Alice Maud, 12; Ethel, 9; Beatrice Rose, 7; Wil­liam John, 5; Vi­o­let Ena, 3; all born in Herne Hill; and Frances Lily, 3 months old, born in Brix­ton. A Henry Hunt is also board­ing there, aged 23, and a house painter (thanks to Stephen Ward who also spot­ted this en­try).

“Ac­cord­ing to Wil­liam John Snr’s WW1 army records, he mar­ried at the Methodist Church, Rail­ton Road, Lam­beth, on 2 Oc­to­ber 1896. On th­ese, his son Wil­liam is recorded as born on 20 Septem­ber 1905. Also, Winifred May, was born on 28 Jan­uary 1914.

“On the 1901 census, Wil­liam, a gen­eral labourer, and Mar­garet were at Hamil­ton Road, Lam­beth. There is also a death en­try for Wil­liam John Snr at Cam­ber­well Sep 1935 age 59 (1d 526).

“Wil­liam John Jnr’s mar­riage was in 1936 to a Dorothy L Amos if the in­dex is right.”
