QAdrian Foster is trying to find out about his grandfather William John Scott. William’s marriage certificate showed that he married in Camberwell in 1930. His bride was née Amos and his father, also William John Scott, had died.
ACatharine Stevens responded, saying: “Looking at the 1911 census, there is an obvious entry for William John Scott, born 1906, in Herne Hill, son of William John Scott and Margaret née Hunt, who married Dec Quarter 1896 in Lambeth (1d 908), and are living at 58 Effra Parade, Brixton.” This shows William John Scott, 34, house painter born Herne Hill and wife Margaret, 30, born in Loughbourgh. The children listed include Margaret, 14; Alice Maud, 12; Ethel, 9; Beatrice Rose, 7; William John, 5; Violet Ena, 3; all born in Herne Hill; and Frances Lily, 3 months old, born in Brixton. A Henry Hunt is also boarding there, aged 23, and a house painter (thanks to Stephen Ward who also spotted this entry).
“According to William John Snr’s WW1 army records, he married at the Methodist Church, Railton Road, Lambeth, on 2 October 1896. On these, his son William is recorded as born on 20 September 1905. Also, Winifred May, was born on 28 January 1914.
“On the 1901 census, William, a general labourer, and Margaret were at Hamilton Road, Lambeth. There is also a death entry for William John Snr at Camberwell Sep 1935 age 59 (1d 526).
“William John Jnr’s marriage was in 1936 to a Dorothy L Amos if the index is right.”
