English sur­veyor Jeremiah Dixon is born in Cock­field. He is best known for the Ma­son- Dixon line, which re­solved a bor­der dis­pute in­volv­ing Mary­land, Penn­syl­va­nia and Delaware in Colo­nial Amer­ica.

The Stock­ton and Dar­ling­ton Rail­way opens, con­nect­ing col­lieries near Shildon with Stock­ton- on-Tees and Dar­ling­ton. It is the world’s first pub­lic rail­way to use steam lo­co­mo­tives.

Durham Cas­tle, a Nor­man cas­tle orig­i­nally con­structed in the city of Durham in the 11th cen­tury, be­comes the home of Univer­sity Col­lege.
