Be­hind the mask Two women pro­tect their faces with fire masks in Down­shire Hill, Lon­don, in 1941. Al­though this im­age was a staged shot that formed part of a fea­ture in Vogue to show how Bri­tish women were cop­ing with the war, fires caused by bomb­ing dur­ing the Blitz were all too com­mon in the city.
