westendatwar.org.uk The highlight of this website, put together for the 70th anniversary of the Blitz, is previously unseen colour footage of London’s West End, shot by the wartime mayor of Marylebone, Alfred Coucher, the area’s chief air raid warden. It includes bombed- out landmarks, such as the John Lewis department store on Oxford Street, plus a brief appearance from Winston Churchill, as he reviews a parade of civil defence workers in Hyde Park. There’s also the fascinating ‘Bomb Incidents’ page, with very detailed surveys of incidents based on civil defence records held at Westminster City Archives.
