The Gregorian calendar came into effect on 1 January 1752. Prior to this, Lady Day (25 March) marked the New Year, and documents created between 1 January and 24 March might be dated with two years (1750/51) denoting the old and new style. Furthermore, 3-13 September 1752 did not exist in Britain. Those 11 days were cut from the calendar, bringing us in line with other countries that reformed their calendars earlier.
