The Swansea and Mumbles Railway is built to move limestone from the quarries of the Mumbles and coal from the Clyne Valley to Swansea. It carries the world’s first fare- paying rail passengers three years later.
On the night of 1 March, Swansea’s streets are publicly lit with gas for the first time. There are 120 lamps.
Swansea Rugby Football Club is founded, eventually becoming one of 11 founding clubs of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1881. Swansea’s first star player is Billy Bancroft.
