Earlier this year, freereg.org.uk (the companion project to FreeCEN and FreeBMD) was revamped. It provides free access to a database of transcribed parish register entries and other sources of baptism, marriage and burial records.
1 Go to the homepage and fill in as many of the search fields as you can. In this case, we are searching for the baptism of Thomas Fryer who was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, in about 1795.
2 A list of search results will come up. Here, only one record has been found – the baptism of Thomas Fryer on 1 December 1794 at the Soresby Street Independent Chapel in Chesterfield. Select the relevant entry by clicking ‘Detail’ to the far right of the entry you want to view.
3 The amount of extra information you will get varies. Here it tells you Thomas’s birth date and his parents’ names. You can also uncover more about the town your ancestor was baptised in by following the link at the top of the page in blue, and from here find out about the individual church.
