Edward Hanmer Murhall Griffith and Elizabeth Phillipson married in Liverpool on 15 March 1864. Their daughter Mary Ellen was born in 1865. Edward appears in a Liverpool trade directory for the same year as a land agent but then disappears from view. In the 1871 census, Mary Ellen appears to be living with her maternal grandparents.

Mary Ellen married John Coupland in Liverpool in 1883 when she stated her father was deceased, but in 1911 she advertised in the New South Wales Police Gazette asking for information about her father, who she believed had died in Australia in the 1890s. After years of searching, I’ve still drawn a blank on Edward and Elizabeth. Can anybody help? Carol Walsh, Preston, Lancashire
