Ber­tram, the third of four boys, was born in Manch­ester in 1888 to Ge­orge and Sarah in se­nior roles for John Rylands, whose name was given to one of Manch­ester’s aca­demic li­braries, then the largest cot­ton man­u­fac­turer in the city. Our fam­ily were, in short, wealthy and priv­i­leged. This was un­der­lined when Ge­orge be­came first a bar­ris­ter, a King’s Coun­sel, and then later Recorder of Old­ham.
