A freema­son may have changed the lodge of which he was a mem­ber, usu­ally be­cause he moved. Also, the lodge he chose to join may not have been the near­est to where he lived. And he was not con­fined to mem­ber­ship of one lodge – when he had passed the third de­gree and be­come a Mas­ter Ma­son, he could join as many lodges as he wished.
