There were lots of labour­ers in the 19th cen­tury and cen­sus enu­mer­a­tors were usu­ally pre­cise in their ter­mi­nol­ogy. ‘Ag lab’ meant the chap on the farm, while ‘labourer’ usu­ally meant quarry work­ers, builders or sim­i­lar. Other sources might not be so par­tic­u­lar about dif­fer­ent labour­ers.
