Create your family history blog
1 Set up the blog
After you’ve confirmed your Google account as your Blogger profile, you’ll be taken to your dashboard where you can set up multiple blogs. Click the ‘New Blog’ button. Give it a title, web address (yourname. blogspot.com), leave ‘Simple’ selected and click ‘Create blog’.
2 Start a post
Go to your blog’s dashboard, where you can manage its settings, review and edit posts and see how many page views it has attracted. Select ‘Posts’ from the left-hand list, then click ‘Create a new post’ to start the process of putting together your first blog entry.
3 Compose posts
Each post has its own descriptive title, so enter this first. Now type the content of your post beneath it. Blogger uses an interface similar to your word processor, so it’s simple to use, with options including text formatting, lists and other tools, plus a spell checker.
4 Add photos
Click where you want the image to go in the post, then click the image button to choose a photo. You can also drag images from your PC directly into the post window. If you click the image button, you can import images from different locations, including a webcam.
5 Reposition photos
You can click on a photo to drag it to a new position. When you click on the image, you’ll also see a series of options appear underneath it. Click ‘Add caption’ to caption the image, or ‘Left’, ‘Centre’ or ‘Right’ to change its position in relation to the rest of your text.
6 Tweak post settings
You’ll need to complete some options on the right-hand side of your screen. Tag your posts with names and other keywords using ‘Labels’, or click ‘Options’ to switch off reader comments. Click ‘Schedule’ to choose when your post will be published.
7 Preview your blog
Click ‘Save’ at regular intervals, then click ‘Preview’ to see how your blog will look in a new tab or window. You’ll get your first glimpse at how your blog looks – don’t like it? Check out the top tip to find out how to change it. Once you’re done, close the browser tab or window.
8 Publish and add pages
Click ‘Publish’ to make your first post live, then return to the dashboard. Click ‘Posts’ to add new posts, or click ‘Pages’ to add standalone pages. When creating pages, visit the ‘Layouts’ section, click ‘Add a Gadget’ and choose ‘Pages’ to add the links to your blog.
