Who Do You Think You Are?

HOW TO...

-

Nick Peers shows how to create a beautiful timeline using Twile

1 Build up your tree

Make sure you’re in ‘Family Tree’ view. Roll your mouse over an individual in the tree and you’ll see three options appear. To add new links, click ‘Add Relative’ to add parents, children, spouse or partner, or sibling. Supply basic details and a photo, and click ‘Add’.

2 Add a milestone

Select a person and click ‘Profile’ to start adding milestones. You’ll see a series of options appear, from census to school and death. Click ‘More milestones…’ to reveal many more options, split into nine sections (a ‘Custom Milestone…’ is also available). Click one.

3 Fill in details

You’ll be asked to enter a date, plus provide a location if you wish (start typing, then select the place from a list of suggested placenames). Click ‘Choose photos…’ to upload one or more photos linked to the milestone in question. Finally, you can add a comment. Click ‘Add’.

5 Edit your milestones

Click ‘Add+’ at the top of the timeline to add new milestones or photos (see step 7), or click on a milestone to view it and make changes. You can insert extra details where relevant, plus extra photos, words or documents, along with a map. You can tag other family members too.

7 Upload photos

Click ‘Add’ and choose ‘Upload Photos’ to add photos without attaching them to milestones. Once uploaded, click the photo to alter its date, tag family members (you’ll probably need to remove yourself from older photos) and add comments, a location and other details.

4 Switch to ‘Timeline’ view

Once you’ve added a few moments for someone in your tree, click ‘Their Timeline’ to take a look at their timeline. You’ll see their key moments are now displayed as a handy timeline, illustrated by any photos you’ve attached to the milestones in question.

6 Make more changes

Click the ‘Edit’ button to reveal options for deleting individual items from the milestone, or click ‘Delete Story’ to remove it completely (useful when duplicate milestones have been brought in via a GEDCOM file). Click ‘Share’ to share selected photos on Facebook.

8 Invite contributors

By default, your tree is visible only to you. To invite a family member, locate their entry on the tree and click it, then choose ‘Invite Them’. Invite by email or text message. Once they sign up for Twile, relatives can view the tree, plus add comments, photos and milestones.
