Wiltshire quarter sessions

Anguline Research Archives ( anguline.co.uk) has provided us with the £14 volume Records of the County of Wilts. This is a collection of extracts from the quarter sessions great rolls of the 17th century, extracted and edited by B Howard Cunnington and first published in 1932, which includes details of crimes and proceedings of local government. As noted in the introduction “with the possible exception of Devonshire, it is doubtful if any other county has such a continuous record as Wiltshire has of the proceedings of its quarter sessions… the Wiltshire records, from 1603 onwards, form an almost complete account of the work carried on by the justices for the benefit of the county and the preservation of order.”

Wiltshire in 1911

This month we also have two complete directories provided by specialist genealogical suppliers My History ( www.my- history.

co.uk). The first dates from 1911 and comprises indexes, local information, directories of towns and villages, as well as trade and private residents’ directories.

Wiltshire in 1923

Our second directory this month, normally £12 from My History, is a vital census substitute from 1923 – the Kelly’s Directory of Wiltshire. Although the source volume was without most of its advertisement pages, all the indexes and directory pages are complete. There are also two maps of Wiltshire – a copy of John Speed’s map of 1610 and one drawn for the directory. To find out more visit www.my-history.co.uk.

Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre

We have a great spread of material from the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. This includes a unique parish register from 1766 describing the burial of “a kind of cannibal man” who died after eating raw horse, photographs relating to Mildred Mary Bruce, world-famous for breaking motor racing, speedboat and aviation records in the 1920s and 30s. There’s an extract from a pedigree of the Seymour family of Wolf Hall, and the Seymour deed – the marriage settlement of Jane Seymour and Henry VIII, 1536. In this Henry grants her property in Southwark, Surrey, Essex and Herefordshire. There are also images of John Speed’s map of Wiltshire, produced in 1610 for his atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain.
