One of the most use­ful fea­tures of the 1939 Reg­is­ter is the an­no­ta­tion made to names. Usu­ally, this was when peo­ple mar­ried, di­vorced, changed their name or were adopted. How­ever, check­ing this record can in­di­cate that an an­ces­tor used a mid­dle name or nick­name rather than their given fore­name.
