Mike Salter was on the hunt for his great great grandfather Charles Salter, but found his search hampered by the existence of another Charles Salter in the same area. He knew that the ‘wrong’ Charles Salter married Ellen Lucas in 1848, and registered her death from cholera in 1854. Mike wanted to be sure that the marriage in 1855 of a widower Charles Salter to Ann Dunn was the same Charles, and not his great great grandfather. To do this he ordered local certificates for all three events, and found that the signatures for Charles Salter all matched.

Mike says, “I had some difficulty obtaining copies of the originals from Westminster Register Office, because they now store older records off-site, but I got there in the end. Although it didn’t reveal my great great grandfather, as family historians well know, a confirmed negative is often a step forward!”
