Gran’s surprise serenade joy
ARESIDENT at a care home was treated to a performance she will never forget.
That’s because 88-year old Doreen Powell, who lives at The Hawthorns in Wilmslow, received a fantastic surprise visit from her grandson, who she had not seen in six years.
Not only had family member Craig come to see his doting grandmother, he also sang for her and all of her fellow residents at the home, on Hawthorn Street, Wilmslow.
Doreen, whose family live in Norfolk, finds it difficult to see them as the five-hour drive to the town is too far for her to travel, meaning she hadn’t seen Craig for six years.
So when staff were told that talented singer Craig was planning a visit, they hatched a plan to give Doreen a performance she would remember forever.
Janet Dewar, activity coordinator at The Hawthorns, said: “Doreen was just blown away. It was lovely to see her so overwhelmed with happiness.
“Other members of Doreen’s family were present as well, and they were thrilled to see her reaction.
“It couldn’t have gone better. We were all taken aback when her grandson started singing; he’s so talented.”
Craig sang some of the residents’ favourite songs, including classic crooner hits and several Rat Pack numbers.
Staff kept Doreen away from the performance area while the ‘afternoon’s entertainment’ got set up.
It is not unusual for the home to have singers come and perform for the residents, so Doreen thought nothing of the secrecy.
When Doreen finally came to take her seat for the performance, and Craig began singing, she was completely overwhelmed.
Janet added: “It was really nice to be able to couple a lovely family reunion with an afternoon of great entertainment.
“I’m sure all of the residents were so happy for Doreen; she cares for her family very dearly.”
