Fundraiser Harry on lifeboat mission
ADETERMINED schoolboy with a passion for lifeboats is on a fundraising mission to visit every lifeboat station in the UK.
Harry Mascall, seven, is fanatical about lifeboats and has set himself the challenge to visit all 236 RNLI stations in the UK and raise money for the charity.
The Pownall Hall School pupil has already visited 51 boathouses and raised almost £1,000 of his £2,500 target over the past six months.
Harry first fell in love with the RNLI and lifeboats during a family holiday to Northumberland, when he went on a tour of the lifeboat station at Seahouses.
After sitting in the Coxswain’s chair on the RNLB Grace Darling, which is now his favourite lifeboat, he decided that he wanted to visit every lifeboat station in the UK and Ireland.
He now spends his school holidays travelling up and down the country to complete his challenge, raising money in the process.
He said: “I love lifeboats because they rescue people in trouble at sea and the crews are very brave.
“I am really looking forward to visiting the Tower RNLI station on the River Thames in London because it is the busiest in the country and they have the fastest rescue boats.”
Tim Mascall, Harry’s dad, said: “He is absolutely obsessed with lifeboats and is determined to complete the challenge and raise as much money as he can for the RNLI.
“Harry finds the lifeboats very exciting, he has met many crew members and is captivated by how brave they all are.”
He added: “When homework allows he enjoys watching rescue programmes and is adamant that when he is old enough he will become an RNLI crew member.
“We’re very proud of him and I wouldn’t bet against him working on a lifeboat one day, as he is very single-minded.”
And thanks to mum Jane documenting his journey on Twitter, Harry now receives invitations to visit from RNLI stations and support for his project on a daily basis.
She said: “He gets so many people emailing and tweeting asking him to visit their station, it’s hard for me to keep up with the requests.
“We set up a Twitter account so people can follow his journey.”
The family spent the last half term touring stations in Wales and are planning to visit the Tower station on the River Thames in London in May.
