Wilmslow artists ready to show off their work
FOUR artists are storming Manchester’s creative scene as part of an all-female collective.
Judith Roberts, Pietra Castellani, Clare Hawkes and Julie Hanson make up the Wilmslow and Handforth contingent of the Northern Women’s Art Collective which has launched its inaugural exhibition in Manchester.
The collective is a troupe of 19 women artists from the north of England coming together to support and encourage each others’ creative talents and showcase their work in ceramics, painting, drawing and photography.
Their first show as a collective has opened in the Nexus Art Cafe on Dale Street, in Manchester.
Judith, 53, of Upcast Lane in Wilmslow, has her ceramics featured in the exhibition.
She said: “We had a great turnout and a real mix of people showed up.
“It’s nice to get feedback on your work, as it really helps to give you confidence as an artist.”
Judith felt having regular meetings as part of the collective helped her gain creative confidence.
She said: “It’s nice to get together with like-minded people.
“I think it just shows that it’s amazing what you can do. I started a bit later in life, and now it’s all I do.”
Pietra uses acrylics to create her vibrant and textured Mediterraneaninspired paintings.
She too is empowered by being part of an allfemale group, saying: “It’s a celebration of all the creativity from women in both the present day and the past.
“A lot of the great artists in years gone by have been men. Female artists have always been around but often went ignored and unappreciated.”
Anne Pollitt, 53, from Middleton, founded the Northern Women’s Art Collective after feeling there was a real need for women artists to be able to meet and exhibit their works.
She said: “One of the brilliant things about the collective is how diverse and inclusive it is. We have psychologists, teach- ers and students as well as professional artists, and we’ve got a real mix of ages and nationalities.
“I’m so pleased with how the group has taken off, and with the support that Nexus has offered us.”
The Collective is busy planning its next installations and plan to pioneer monthly workshops in Manchester. Their exhibition runs in the Nexus art café until June 1 and all pieces are available to buy.
