Andy goes cross-country... by scooter
ADISABLED war veteran is trying to set a new world record by travelling from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a mobility scooter.
Former Army Corporal Andy McIntosh, 42, will attempt to tackle the mammoth 1,000-mile journey in just 16 days – eight days faster than the current record.
Andy, who recently moved to Scotland from Heaton Moor, Stockport, will travel between 45 and 74 miles each day, despite having an extremely rare medical condition which affects his circulation and mobility. Andy has a vascular condition that means his veins are blocked from the waist down and the main vein that carries blood back to his heart from his legs has disintegrated.
His condition is so rare that he believes he is the only person in the country who has it.
The retired corporal, who served on the front line in Bosnia, Iraq and Northern Ireland during 14 years with the Cheshire Regiment, is taking on the challenge to raise money for several military charities, including Poppy Scotland, SSAFA, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Erskine and Soldiers off the Streets.
Andy said: “There have been a lot of tears since receiving the news that my condition is untreatable, but I am a man that never gives up.
“I’ve been in some very dark places but I won’t let this beat me.
“This world record attempt will be a real challenge for sure, but gives me a focus to remain positive and ensures I can thank the charities that have been so supportive to my family and I.”
The charity TGA Mobility has loaned Andy an 8mph Breeze S4 GT scooter, a model which has extra wide rear wheels and heavy duty batteries, and has previously won the BBC Top Gear Extreme Mobility Scooter chal- lenge. Andy, who will set off on Tuesday, May 5, has already completed a 100mile journey on the scooter in aid of military charities last year.
He added: “Despite my walking difficulties and health issues, I am deter- mined to complete this epic journey and raise funds to help fellow disabled servicemen and women.
“I am so appreciative of TGA loaning me such a sturdy scooter, I know I will have peace of mind when it comes to reliability. I have complete faith in my own determination and the reliability of the Breeze.”
