Handforth mum makes the most out of messy meals

AMUM who made the most of messy mealtimes with a new product to keep kids tidy is looking for votes in a business competition.

Jennifer Unsworth, 35, was inspired to make a new product to make mealtimes hassle-free for mums while on maternity leave with her own children. She is mum to Chloe, four, and Tom, 14 months.

She designed and manufactured Tidy Tot, a tray and bib combination to catch children’s food mess.

Now she has entered a competition to pitch her idea to Richard Branson.

Tidy Tot has been entered for Virgin Media’s Pitch to Rich competition in the New Things category, which is for products that look set to change the way we do things.

Jennifer, whose last role was as an operations manager for The Work Company and lives in Handforth with husband Mike, said: “The idea for Tidy Tot came about while I was on maternity leave with my little girl four years ago. I had a little boy last year and the same frustrations with messy mealtimes made me determined to bring Tidy Tot to market.

“In the last 12 months I have designed and sourced manufacture for Tidy Tot and am single-handedly launching and marketing the product.

“I have secured a listing with one of the big names in retail and should have the product on their shelves in the next six months.

“This is my first venture into product development and I’ve had to get to grips with importing, manufacturing, safety legislation and a whole host of other things. I’ve used a significant proportion of local businesses to help get things off the ground.

“I need as many votes as I can get in the Pitch to Rich competition to be in with a chance of pitching to Richard Branson and his team.”

Tidy Tot went on a consumer trial in October and will launch at The Baby Show at Birmingham NEC next month.

Jennifer said: “Tidy Tot eliminates the gap between the baby and highchair tray, keeping baby’s clothes, highchair and floor food free.

“It’s portable and works with both highchairs and booster seats. It’s a must have for any weaning parent and I’m so excited I’ve been able to bring it to market.”

Tidy Tot will be available from tidytot.co.uk from May 17.

Votes must be cast in the competition by Tuesday, May 5. Go to virgin mediabusiness.co.uk/ pitch-to-rich.
