SNP heavyweight Jim Sillars was campaigning in Shotts last week lending his support to the party’s candidate in the upcoming council by-election.

Sillars was with SNP candidate Mags Murphy speaking to voters at Shotts Healthy Living Centre.

He said: “I first met Mags at a public meeting for Neil Gray MP in 2015. She was brilliant that night and I encouraged her to stand for election there and then.

“She understands how life can be a struggle and wants to help people get on. I have been incredibly impressed by her and hope she gets elected on September 7.”

The by-election in Fortissat is a result of Conservative candidate Sandy Thornton not taking his seat — costing the taxpayer £50,000.

Murphy said: “Jim has been a force at the top of Scottish politics for decades. He is an inspiration to people like me so I am delighted and very grateful that he has come to Shotts to support me.

“My campaign is about my record of service for the people in and around Shotts. I want to take that service to North Lanarkshire Council and be a loud voice for my community.

“I am working hard with my team to secure as many number one votes as possible and will be doing that right up until September 7.”
