Serving up a huge charity cash boost
A fundraising effort by students at New College Lanarkshire went down a treat, raising £ 1000 for a cancer charity.
Students on hospitality and professional cookery courses at the Motherwell campus raised the fantastic amount for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Staff, students and members of the public were invited to enjoy coffee mornings, lunches and bake-offs in training restaurant, ML One.
The charity bake-off, with delicious treats including shortbread, coffee cake and cheesecake all on show were judged by chef lecturers, Fiona Moffat and Jim Mullen.
Lorna Hart, organiser of the fundraisers and lecturer in service industries, said: “We are delighted with the amount raised for Macmillan. It allowed our students to brush up on their hospitality and cookery skills in front of the public ahead of its official opening date.
“I’d like to thank everyone who worked hard to make the event a success, all the students and staff who took part in the bake-offs and all those who donated so generously.”
The students presented the cheque to Angela McCormack, area fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support.
She said: “Thank you so much to the staff and students at New College Lanarkshire for supporting the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and for raising the fantastic sum of £1000.
“At Macmillan we know cancer can affect everything. Your body, your relationships, your money, everything. But we are here to help people live life, no matter what. We give them the support they need to hold on to who they are and what’s important.
“But we can’t do it without the support of our fantastic fundraisers and volunteers.
“Life with cancer is still life – let’s help people live it.”
The ML One training restaurant in the Motherwell Campus is open to the public from 12–1.30pm Monday to Thursday.
