Wishaw has its own queen of the ice.

Eight-year-old ice skat­ing star­let Lia Wil­son is cel­e­brat­ing this week af­ter land­ing a spot on the Great Bri­tain de­vel­op­ment team.

Be­ing part of this squad means Lia, who lives in Nether­ton, must at­tend train­ing camps with other GB fig­ure skaters in Sh­effield, where she will be fit­ness tested on a reg­u­lar ba­sis and con­tin­u­ally mon­i­tored by The Na­tional Ice Skat­ing As­so­ci­a­tion (NISA).

Proud mum Laura said: “We are so proud of Lia. She was worked re­ally hard and de­serves ev­ery­thing she has got.

“She was only six when she de­cided she wanted to skate af­ter watch­ing Danc­ing on Ice.

“It’s great to be able to see her do­ing so well so quickly.”

Lia, a mem­ber of the East Kil­bride Fig­ure Skat­ing Club, trains four times a week at the rink.

This means Laura or husband Craig start their day at 4.30am on Thurs­day and Fri­day as Lia trains be­fore she goes to school at Muir­house Pri­mary.

How­ever, the hard work has cer­tainly paid off as in the last year Lia has gone from com­pet­ing at level one to level four, skat­ing against girls twice her age and she has won her first level three com­pe­ti­tion.
