“Don’t be afraid to mix old and new. Classic and contemporary styles can work really well alongside each other – just follow your instincts and invest in good quality pieces”

SUZANNE PETERSON HAD BEEN LIVING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE FOR SEVERAL YEARS WHEN SHE DECIDED TO MOVE TO THE COAST. “I WANTED TO BE CLOSER TO MY SON JUSTIN AND HIS FIANCÉE KATHRYN IN KENT,” SHE EXPLAINS. “I’D WANTED TO LIVE BY THE SEA EVER SINCE I WAS A CHILD, AND IT SEEMED LIKE THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY.”

SUZANNE BEGAN AN ONLINE PROPERTY SEARCH AND DECIDED TO LOOK FOR A CONTEMPORARY NEW-BUILD HOME. “MY PREVIOUS HOME WAS A GRADE II LISTED COACH HOUSE, WHICH I’D RENOVATED TOTALLY FROM SCRATCH,” SHE SAYS. “WHEN I THOUGHT ABOUT MOVING HOUSE, I DECIDED I DIDN’T WANT TO TACKLE ANOTHER MAJOR BUILDING PROJECT, AND ALL THE MESS AND STRESS IT WOULD INVOLVE. I’M AN INTERIOR DESIGNER BY PROFESSION AND JUST FOR ONCE, I WANTED TO FOCUS COMPLETELY ON THE DECOR. IT FELT LIKE A GREAT CHANCE TO SIMPLIFY MY LIFESTYLE.”

AFTER A COUPLE OF FALSE STARTS WHEN HER HOUSE SALE AND PLANNED PURCHASE FELL THROUGH, SUZANNE EVENTUALLY FOUND THE PERFECT NEW-BUILD PROPERTY FOR HERSELF AND HER PARTNER MICHAEL: A FOUR-BEDROOM DETACHED SEASIDE HOUSE, ONLY 15 MINUTES’ DRIVE FROM BRIGHTON. “I WAS IMMEDIATELY ATTRACTED TO THE FABULOUS SEA VIEWS AND AMAZING SENSE OF LIGHT AND SPACE,” SHE SAYS.

ONCE THE PURCHASE WAS FINALISED, SUZANNE PROMPTLY BEGAN A MAJOR CLEAR-OUT. “MY PREVIOUS HOME WAS MOSTLY FURNISHED WITH ANTIQUES, WHICH SIMPLY WOULDN’T HAVE LOOKED RIGHT

SENTIMENTAL VALUE AND SOLD OR GAVE AWAY THE REST. IT WAS A TOTAL CLEAN SWEEP,” SHE SAYS. THE NEXT STEP WAS PLANNING THE DECOR. “I LOVE CLASSIC SCANDI STYLE WITH LOTS OF SOFT CREAMS AND GREYS, BUT SINCE THE HOUSE HAS AN ULTRA-MODERN KITCHEN AND BATHROOMS, I DECIDED TO BE BOLD AND ADD SOME VIVID POPS OF COLOUR. I ALSO PLANNED TO USE MIRRORS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE TO MAKE THE SPACE FEEL EVEN LIGHTER AND BRIGHTER.”

SUZANNE CHOSE BLINDS RATHER THAN CURTAINS FOR THE DOWNSTAIRS LIVING SPACES, AND INSTALLED PLANTATION SHUTTERS UPSTAIRS TO CREATE A CONTINENTAL FEEL. FOLLOWING THROUGH ON HER RESOLUTION TO BE MORE ADVENTUROUS WITH COLOUR, SHE USED BRIGHT FUCHSIA PINK AND LIME GREEN AS ACCENTS IN HER SCANDI-INSPIRED NEUTRAL SCHEME. “USING BRIGHT, VIBRANT SHADES REALLY HAS MADE THE SPACE FEEL MORE CONTEMPORARY,” SHE SAYS.

NOW THAT THE WORK IS FINISHED, SUZANNE SAYS THE MOVE TO HER NEW HOUSE HAS BEEN A GREAT SUCCESS.

“IT’S WONDERFUL TO BE CLOSER TO MY FAMILY AND LIVING BY THE SEA REALLY IS A DREAM COME TRUE.” W&H
