Pre­dom­i­nately Chardon­nay with some Pinot Noir from a small bio­dy­namic es­tate, this bone-dry sparkler has fresh, in­tense ripe ap­ple and flo­ral aro­mas. The palate is creamy, with grilled al­mond char­ac­ters and a no­table per­sis­tence on the fin­ish.

er­razuriz, Wild Fer­ment Chardon­nay, Casablanca Val­ley, Chile 2015, 13%, £12.99, Ma­jes­tic Con­sis­tently de­li­cious, this is a fine Chardon­nay that has spent some time on its lees to give it ex­tra di­men­sion and com­plex­ity. The re­sult is richly tex­tured, with in­tense but­tery char­ac­ters, and ripe ap­ple and cit­rus fruit. An op­u­lent palate is in­fused with se­duc­tive notes of sub­tle oak.

Bâ­ton­nage (lees stir­ring) dur­ing the age­ing adds tex­ture and creami­ness to the dry mouth­feel. A dry style with a very long fin­ish.

Araldica, bar­bera d’Asti Su­pe­ri­ore, pied­mont, Italy 2014, 14.5%, £8.99, Waitrose Made by a co­op­er­a­tive, this is the per­fect to­mato-based pasta/ pizza wine. This Bar­bera al­ways de­liv­ers and won’t dis­ap­point. It’s juicy and light in body, with black cherry char­ac­ters. Tan­nins are soft and backed up by a high acid­ity that keeps your taste buds fresh and alive.

Château unang, Ven­toux, France 2014, 14%, £13, odd­bins Part of the Rhône Val­ley but bor­der­ing Provence, the vine­yards lie on the slope of the Mont Ven­toux, ranked as “UNESCO Bio­sphere”. From a tra­di­tional Rhône blend, this is packed with black fruit and spice. The palate is smooth and juicy, with more black fruit char­ac­ters and thyme. This is cry­ing out for a leg of lamb.

A great al­ter­na­tive to Mal­bec, it’s broad and rich, with plenty of dark juicy fruit and a bright acid­ity. Tan­nins are raw and coarse, which makes food a must.
