INSIDER know-how: Champagne & Prosecco
What’s the difference? Champagne comes from the French Champagne region, Prosecco from Veneto in northern Italy. Champagne can be a blend or single varietal made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier; Prosecco is made from the Glera grape. For both, the still wine undergoes a second fermentation to make it sparkling. In Champagne, yeast and sugar is added to the bottle; for Prosecco, it happens in a tank. Closer contact with the yeast gives Champagne its toast and citrus flavours, while for Prosecco, it’s about the grape’s profile – pear, apple, honeysuckle and floral notes.
