Most of us turn to loved ones when we’re in need of a bit of TLC, but royal protocol dictates that Kate can’t just nip to her mother Carole’s home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, when she wants to.

‘Kate’s position is very different to the life she was born into and sometimes she can find that hard,’ says our source.

This generation of royals are very different to the past, with William’s mother Diana heralded as the reason for the breakaway from traditions. Prince Harry previously recalled of his mother, ‘One of her mottos to me was, “You can be as naughty as you want, just don’t get caught!”’

Unlike George, in the past young princes and princesses would have been sent away to boarding school as, amongst other reasons, they were thought to be safer.

This shun in tradition is in keeping with the ‘normal’ new breed of royal we’ve come to know. But how normal can Kate and William really be, given their royal status?

‘Of course there are times when Kate would like to be able to just pop out or take the kids to soft play and be a “normal” family, but that’s not what she signed up for,’ says our source, who adds, ‘Being holed up at home, feeling really poorly and missing your son’s first day school wouldn’t be easy for anyone and there’s no doubt she struggles with that at times.’
