my face has swollen up like a chipmunk’s!

Q One side of my face has swollen up, I look like a one-sided chipmunk! It hurts but isn’t red, and I don’t have toothache, so what could it be?

Philippa says:

a There are various options here that could be the cause of the facial swelling, so please see your doctor and perhaps your dentist, too. You may have an abscess, which can be related to a dental problem. You say you don’t have a toothache but that the swelling hurts, so this is still a possibility. Other potential diagnoses include parotitis, which is an infection of the parotid gland on the side of the face. This used to be caused by mumps, but can also be due to other viral or bacterial infections. Another possibility is there is a small stone in the duct of one of the salivary glands causing swelling in the gland.
