Around 2.2 mil­lion UK wom were screened for breast can­cer last year, and over 18,400 were di­ag­nosed with breast can­cer. If you’re reg­is­tered with a GP, you should re­ceive an in­vi­ta­tion for a free mam­mo­gram eve three years be­tween the ag of 50-70, but it’s es­ti­mated around 30% never at­tend. ‘Most women find the pro­ce­dure un­com­fort­able,’ ad­mits Prof Carmichael. ‘But screen­ing saves one lif for ev­ery 200 UK women screened (around 1,300 lives each year).’
