‘One in 10 women presenting to a breast clinic may have breast cancer – so not every lump found here, leads to the diagnosis of cancer,’ says Prof Carmichael, so don’t let fear of finding out stop you attending a screening. ‘Treatment of breast cancer involves surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, anti-hormone treatments and targeted ones, such as Trastuzumab. The survival rates are getting better all the time – there are more women alive with breast cancer today then every before.’
