Pregnancy and Christmas dinner

Woman's Own - - ASK THE DOCTOR -

Q My daughter and her husband are coming to us for Christmas. She is 20 weeks pregnant. We are all very excited and I am busy planning menus but just wanted to check a few dietary things. She loves fish and I seem to remember that there are some she should avoid.

A You are right – pregnant women should avoid swordfish, marlin and shark, as they are likely to be higher in mercury, and she should limit herself to two fresh tuna steaks or four medium-sized cans of tuna per week. Sushi is fine as long as the fish has been frozen first, as freezing kills any worms in the fish.

Ensure the fish used for sushi has been frozen
