1 Blood tests for high lev­els of iron in the blood (trans­fer­rin sat­u­ra­tion) and body (fer­ritin), and to see how your pan­creas, liver and or­gans are work­ing. 2 Checks for other causes of iron build-up (iron sup­ple­ments, blood trans­fu­sions, kid­ney dial­y­sis, liver dis­or­ders, and other con­di­tions that af­fect how the body han­dles iron). 3 Ul­tra­sound and/or MRI scans to see how var­i­ous or­gans/tis­sues are af­fected. 4 Liver biopsy (small tissue sam­ple taken us­ing lo­cal anaes­thetic) to as­sess dam­age, and look for any liver con­di­tions. 5 Blood tests for faulty genes. Rel­a­tives may need to be tested too – the ear­lier treat­ment is started, the bet­ter.
