More peo­ple are be­ing di­ag­nosed with coeliac dis­ease thanks to greater aware­ness – de­tec­tion rates rose by 25% be­tween 2011 and 2015. Sen­si­tiv­ity to gluten in wheat and other ce­re­als can mimic ir­ri­ta­ble bowel syn­drome, but causes mal­nu­tri­tion and other, pre­ventable, long-term ef­fects.
