WHAT IS IT?

Whether or not you already do strength training, chances are you won’t get a workout like this on your own. The buzzing atmosphere is key to your success here – flipping tyres barely short of 150kg or pressing steel logs above your head will require a little encouragement, after all. Lucky for us, then, that our class was led by the incredibly motivating Laura Hoggins (@bicepsandbronzer), who knows a thing or two about lifting heavy. Using kit like yokes and weighted sleds also gives you the opportunity to really test your all-round functional strength in a way that you can’t in a regular gym. Moving around as much weight as you will be in this class will also give you a mental edge that’s truly unique.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

You’ll get strong – that’s a given. The opportunity to try strongman disciplines in a safe, controlled and educational environment will seriously have you working so hard. The intensity is fairly high, so you’ll be burning calories and working the muscles in your entire body. But the sense of empowerment and the mental training you’ll get from pushing yourself this hard is unrivalled.

HOW HARD IS IT?

Well let’s just say you probably couldn’t challenge your muscles in the same way without access to this kind of kit, the knowledgeable instructors and motivation from the others in the class. You will feel seriously pushed and out of breath, especially after the sled pulls and pushes. Oh, and expect to ache for days afterwards.

WHERE IS IT?

The Foundry studios in Vauxhall and Old Street, both in London. £20 for a single class, with introductory deals also available.
