An As­ton Univer­sity study found that when par­ents used food as a re­ward or to ease pain, the child was more likely to rely on high-calo­rie, fatty foods to cope with stress later in life. ‘Try to iden­tify whether you’re bored, lonely, stressed or ac­tu­ally hun­gry,’ says health psy­chol­ogy ex­pert Pro­fes­sor Jackie Blis­set. ‘If you’re strug­gling, use the app Com­fort Eater Beater, which has a mood ques­tion­naire to pro­vide tar­geted tips.’ Just re­mem­ber: doughnuts are never the an­swer.
