Take a look at the mind-blow­ing cases in­sects build them­selves

Be­fore they take to the air, mos­qui­toes live on wa­ter. Buoy­ant pu­pae float along on the sur­face, us­ing breath­ing tubes known as trum­pets to take in oxy­gen. If the de­vel­op­ing in­sects find them­selves in dan­ger they can dive out of the way and bob back up when the trou­ble has passed.
