Cheek pouches are a use­ful adap­ta­tion that most ground squir­rels have de­vel­oped to eas­ily trans­port food. The pouches are found be­hind the front teeth and can hold mul­ti­ple nuts. A spe­cial mus­cle helps the ro­dent to empty its cheeks once it is safely in its bur­row.
