En­demic to Tai­wan, this bird was first recorded in 1906. Or­nithol­o­gists search­ing for the equally rare Swin­hoe’s pheas­ant dis­cov­ered that the dark feath­ers adorn­ing a lo­cal tribesman’s head­dress be­longed to the Mikado pheas­ant, a bird that was com­pletely new to science.
