Borderlands 3 teased in tech demo by Gearbox head honcho
Time to start prepping your gun-loot chest, readers, because a new Borderlands game is on the way! Well, sort of, anyway.
During a recent talk at the Game Developers Conference, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford took to the stage to show off a tech demo on how to create that distinctive cel-shaded Borderlands look. But alongside the the shading talk and nifty texture demonstrations were characters that looked like they were ready to step straight into their next game.
While showing off the power of the Unreal 4 Engine on vehicle engines and road signs, to show the audience how the hand-drawn style changes automatically on different shapes and textures, we caught glimpses of a character suspiciously obscured by a giant shoulder pad and hi-tech gear. Could it be a grown up Tiny Tina?
They also showed off a full dinerlike area after zooming out from a lighting and explosives display (which totally sounds like Tiny Tina’s area of expertise) that looked like a lot more than just a demo.
Pitchford made no promises for a sequel, reiterating that this was just a demonstration of what a future Borderlands game might look like, but this isn’t the first time he’s mentioned it either. He previously said that the studio’s next game after Battleborn and its DLC would be Borderlands 3, so the timing’s right.
While any future project will no doubt go through several different iterations and plenty of cuts from what was shown in the demo, Pitchford also had a message for series fans. “If you’re a customer that’s looking forward to a future Borderlands game, we’re working on it. We’ll get you soon.”
