08 Necro­morphs Dead Space

The in­tro­duc­tion to Dead­S­pace’s necro­morph en­emy should be taught in game de­sign schools for how to make a player fear the un­known. From the mo­ment you ar­rive on the Ishimura, you know some­thing is wrong, but the game makes you wait, hint­ing at the hor­rors to come with shad­ows and blood. And when you fi­nally see them, there’s some­thing just hu­man enough about necro­morphs to make them prop­erly chill­ing – es­pe­cially when you reach the end of the game and re­alise the truth about the alien Marker. Thank­fully, it’s jolly good fun slic­ing them up with Isaac Clarke’s im­pres­sive ar­ray of in­dus­trial sci-fi weapons.
