Over the course of the FEAR games, Alma goes from sin­is­ter ghost-girl to full-on, dear-lord-what-did-you-do-to-me malev­o­lent spirit. But she’s most ef­fec­tive early on. The glimpses of her you catch in the first FEAR game are per­fectly done, with the same kind of re­straint you’d ex­pect from the East Asian hor­ror films which clearly in­form her de­sign. It works be­cause they’re specif­i­cally de­signed for games – things like see­ing her ap­pear at the top of a lad­der a split-sec­ond be­fore you de­scend. As you progress through the game you dis­cover she’s got a good rea­son for be­ing con­sumed by vengeance, but it doesn’t make her any less ter­ri­fy­ing.
