There’s no widespread consensus on EA’s best football game, with standout entries including FIFA11 (which enabled you to import teams made in a browser-based ‘Creation Centre’) and FIFA14 (first entry on Xbox One). But it’s 09 which enters our Hall of Fame thanks to a name you’ve likely never heard before: David Rutter.
Always vocal about his love of rival PES, Rutter took over the series and immediately set about eliminating gimmicks and focusing on sim-based gameplay. In doing so FIFA09 lay the foundation for the franchise as it is today: equal to, and many would argue better than, ProEvolutionSoccer – an unthinkable prospect for anyone who played football games in the early 2000s.
