Buzzed at The Bill

Yachting Monthly - - LETTERS -

At approximately 0600 hrs last week, while on passage around Portland Bill bound for Dartmouth on our Hallberg-Rassy 342, I spotted an object about 50m to starboard at about masthead height. It hung in the sky, looking rather like a mini spaceship, with two red eyes. It hovered in space for about two minutes, then swooped off. My wife Sue and I gobsmacked, then I was reminded of the rather more pressing engagement of spotting lobster pot buoys.

We assumed it was a drone. I would be interested to hear of any similar encounters of a drone kind by fellow sailors. I suppose it was a drone geek strutting his stuff, but could it have been an observational drone deployed by the coastal watch authorities, or something more sinister? The possibilities are endless!

On our return trip a week later we had a much more friendly encounter with a pod of 10 Dolphins, which was much more fun. Chris Emery
