Solo star in the making?
Sébastien Simon, a 28-year-old sailor from Les Sables d’olonne, won the 49th edition of La Solitaire URGO Le Figaro in September by 16 minutes (which counts as a relatively comfortable margin in this ultracompetitive one-design fleet).
Simon is the youngest winner of La Solitaire since Franck Cammas’s triumph in 1995, and said to have the talent to follow the successes of recent Figaro stars like François Gabart and Armel Le Cléac’h.
Despite much early promise, La Solitaire ended in disappointment for the British competitors. Tactical errors in the final two legs dropped both Alan Roberts and Hugh Brayshaw out of contention for a top ten finish.
Next year’s 50th edition will be raced in the new foil-enhanced Figaro 3 and is expected to see famous names such as Michel Desjoyeaux, Loick Peyron and Franck Cammas in the fleet.
