Our first three weeks at sea were dominated by uncomfortable upwind sailing. It had begun gloriously for our crew of five – Paddy Broughton, Ian Goldsworthy, Jamie Hastie, Martin Grixoni and me – five-sail reaching with the mizzen staysail and asymmetric kite, dolphins playing round the bow and, on slower days, learning to splice or playing Scrabble. But then the wind turned against us, and our crew of five learned to live life at an angle.
