1936: Gen­er­a­tors at Boul­der Dam (later re­named to Hoover Dam) be­gin to gen­er­ate elec­tric­ity from the Colorado River and trans­mit it 266 miles to Los An­ge­les. The dam’s gen­er­a­tors pro­vide power for pub­lic and pri­vate util­i­ties in Ne­vada, Ari­zona, and Cal­i­for­nia. The Hoover Dam is a ma­jor tourist at­trac­tion; nearly a mil­lion peo­ple tour the dam each year.
