Formed from students and many of the fine singers in the area, it is a massive chorus requiring the building of a special seating area at the end of the nave to accommodate them.
It has proved a potent combination, creating the vibrant quality that places it among Yorkshire’s famous choral names, and brings about the staging of largescale and popular works, this year’s choice being Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.
If the choir is something very special, the university’s instrumentalists, under the direction of Peter Seymour, have aspirations of rivalling our major professional orchestras.
Adding icing to the proverbial cake, the performance includes one of the world’s most outstanding interpreters of Gerontius, Adrian Thompson, who heads the team of soloists that includes the mezzo, Jeanette Ager, and bass, Mark Rowlinson.
The celebration of student achievement continues the following Wednesday evening with a concert in memory of the benefactor, Sir Jack Lyons.
It showcases the past year’s outstanding student performances and features the world premiere of Desmond Clarke’s Dream/ Cascade.
Dream of Gerontius, York Minster, June 18, 7.30pm; Student Showcase, Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, Jun 25, 7,30pm. Tickets from 01904 322439 or www.yorkconcerts. co.uk.
