ASTRA GOES TOURING
Here is the first official snap of the Astra Sports Tourer estate, which will be on sale before the end of the year.
Like the five-door hatchback model, it is built at Ellesmere Port and has an upper body engineered by Vauxhall in Bedfordshire. It shares the hatchback’s long wheelbase with an 11-inch longer load capacity. Maximum load volume rises slightly by 30 litres. The rear seats fold away at the press of a button inside the load area. The chassis has been retuned for potentially heavier loads.
There are four petrol engines and two diesels at launch, with a 94bhp 1.3 diesel with stop-start ignition coming in 2011.
For customers who tow, the Sports Tourer will be available with Vauxhall’s electronic “Trailer Stability Assist system”, which subtly brakes individual wheels to maintain control of the trailer/caravan in emergency situations. Tuesday: An electric Vauxhall Ampera, on sale in 2012, will start the “longest single road trip ever for an electric vehicle in the UK”, a claim open to debate. The target on a single charge is to drive from Vauxhall Luton to Vauxhall Ellesmere Port – more than 170 miles.
