Porsche power game with hybrid Spyder
IS this the world’s most expensive hybrid car? Porsche is asking 645,00 euros, plus national VAT and on-the-road charges, for its 918 Spyder, dubbed the super sports car.
It combines 199mph potential and 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds with amazing economy, anticipated at 94 miles a gallon with carbon emissions of just 70g/km. On electric power alone, it can reach 94mph.
Porsche is already predicting to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes and 30 seconds – just two seconds ahead of the Porsche Carrera GT.
The power units are a 500 horse power, 4-litre V8 for the back wheels and two electric motors delivering 218hp to the front and rear axles.
The electricity storage is in a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket, delivering a range in excess of 16 miles on purely electric power.
Only 918 are being made, all left-hand-drive, with delivery from November 2013.
Buyers are offered first grabs of the commemorative 911 Turbo S ‘Edition 918 Spyder’, also limited to 918 units, costing £125,865 for the coupé and £133,553 for the cabriolet.
Available in right-hand drive, from this June.
